linux has been the been windows newest and biggest competition.
linux is a free open source software, there was 12 million usere in the 80' s, it is an alternative operating system to windows, it was developed by programmers on the net, and very well liked for its speed.
Linus Torvalds:works on the kernel-thinks that the only use of an operating system is to help the programs that people want to use.
OPEN source: a way for people to callaborate on software without having to negotiate with contracts and purchases in order to let the whole world use the software in order to be able to use and work with their operating system.
Richard Stallman: worked at MIT and is the founder of the GNU project. the people were made to put passwords and the hackers were not happy with the regulations set on them.

the homebrew computer club was made by many hackers in the silicone valley in order to pass around
